Poetry Wedding Theme

A client recently asked me for some ideas on how to plan a Poetry themed wedding.

CLIENT: My fiancé is a spoken word performance poet, and I am a lover and published author of poetry. This is kind of what connected us and we want to use this as our theme.

However I am having the worst time coming up with any ideas to use as far as decorations that include poetry, table settings, anything. I am clueless. Do you have any suggestions as far as a poetry themed wedding, favor, decorations, etc

MY THOUGHTS: Using a poetry wedding theme is a great idea, and it is definitely unique. Here are a few ideas for you to work with:

Invitations
For your invitations and wedding programs, add poems that you have written, or add a famous wedding-related poem.

Vows
Work poems into your wedding vows. Choose poems that each of you have written, or choose verses that hold a special meaning to your relationship.

Ceremony
Have two or three close friends or family members read your favorite poems during your wedding ceremony.

Reception
Instead of table numbers, use famous poets. So, instead of guests sitting at table 5 they will sit at the Maya Angelou table, for example.

Or, if you have one favorite poet, each table can take the name of a poem. If you chose Robert Frost, for example, table names could include The Road Not Taken, Fire and Ice and The Lockless Door.

A wishing tree is a great way for guests to leave you a special note on your wedding day. The leaves can be decorated with poems on one side, and your guests can write you a special wish on the other side. When they are finished, your guests hang the leaves on your tree. Wishing trees are sometimes used instead of a guest book.

Cake
Cover your cake table with an embroidered table linen. Personalize it by having your favorite love poem embroidered into the linen.

Your wedding cake can also be decorated with words from a poem, or you can also have your cake displayed on a serving plate that is decorated with a poem (see photo).

Favors
For your wedding favors, consider collecting all of your favorite love or wedding related poems into a small book to give to your guests. Include poems that you have written and poems that reflect what your relationship means to you both.

Bookmarks work well also, and they can be decorated with just about any photo and poem.
Mini poetry kits are yet another option for wedding favors, and there are magnetic poetry kits available in many different themes and styles.

Duties of the Maid / Matron of Honor

When choosing your Maid/Matron of honor you should make sure she is someone you can depend upon through thick and thin as she will play a major role in your wedding. She can be your best friend, or a family member. Some brides are even asking their mothers' to stand up with them as their Matron of Honor.

Here are some of the duties of the Maid/Matron of Honor

1. Provides the bride with advice and moral support when she is frustrated and ready to pull her hair.

2. Helps with pre-wedding activities such as addressing invitations, making phone calls, and running errands. Often accompanies the bride when meeting caters, florist, bakers etc.

3. Helps the bride pick her gown and the bridesmaid dresses.

4. Acts as the head-bridesmaid: organizes bridesmaid's gown fittings, schedules all wedding day hair and makeup appointments, spreads the word about the bridal registry.

5. Pays for her own wedding attire (excluding flowers).

6. Attends all pre-wedding parties.

7. May host a bridal shower (with or without the help of the bridesmaids).

8. Helps the bride dress and stay calm on her wedding day.

9. Precedes the bride down the isle.

10. Holds the groom's ring until ceremony exchange (only if there is no ring-bearer).

11. Arranges bride's veil and train during ceremony.

12. Holds bride's bouquet during part of the ceremony.

13. May stand in receiving line.

14. May sign the wedding certificate as a witness.

15. Helps the bride get ready for her honeymoon when leaving the reception.

16. After the reception she gathers up any gifts, and makes sure they are brought safely to the couple's home.

17. In the days following the reception she will make sure any rental items are returned to the store. She may also take the bride's wedding gown to the dry-cleaners so it can be preserved properly (Hint: The sooner the gown is dry-cleaned, the less chance there are of permanent stains!)

Top 10 Wedding Flowers - Pro's and Cons

1. Calla Lilies

These flowers are known for their elegance and variety of colour, like white, orange, yellow and burgundy. Calla lilies are perfect for weddings because their trumpet like appearance looks as though they are heralding the union.

Uses:Can be used alone to create stunning bridal party bouquets or table centerpieces but they also work well in arrangements with other flowers, like roses.

Pros: No filler flowers are required to make a calla lily bouquet stand out as this is the perfect stand alone flower. A do-it-yourselfer's dream, simply tie a white sheer ribbon around 5 or more calla lilies and voila! Easy and elegant.

Cons: Calla Lilies are extremely unforgiving if handled incorrectly. They mark easily and show signs of wear and tear when mishandled.

2. Daisies

Daisies are always an excellent choice; they add simplicity to the bouquet and are available in a vast array of colors. They represent purity and innocence and are considered a flower for all occasions.

Uses: Can be used for both centerpieces and bouquets. You can have a few long stems in a vase or create a low compact arrangement using their wide petals to cover the spaces in between for a dramatic effect.

Pros: Daisies are very versatile, and affordable. Plus, they can be used for both formal and informal events.

Cons: Works well with wires from inside the stem but don't hold up well when wire wrapped.

3. Hyacinths

One of its stalks houses several small, fragrant flowers. Available in purple, blue, pink, white, and yellow, this flower is versatile and fun and its scent is said to calm the nerves.

Uses: Can be used as the only flower of the arrangement or the individual flowers from the stalk can be removed and incorporated into an arrangement. Their small flowers can also be used to make flower tiaras and their short stems make them perfect for low arrangements. They can be used as centerpieces and cake flowers. Plus, they make great hand tied bouquets!

Pros: Works well with all spring blooms, especially hydrangeas.

Cons: Hyacinths are a spring bloom; so finding them in the off season may be difficult and expensive. Also, their short stems won't work well with tall arrangements.

4. Hydrangeas

They are very popular for their volume; their clusters of flowers give the illusion of many flowers bunched together. Blue is the most popular variety but they are also available in pink and white.

Uses: Perfect for monochromatic bouquets or arrangements. They can easily be used for the bridal party bouquets or for the centerpieces, with other flowers or alone.

Pros: Hydrangeas are very sturdy and can last a long time out of water. They are also beautiful when dried; so, if you are looking for flowers that you can preserve, the hydrangea is your best bet! Plus, they are available almost all year long and they work well with most flowers!

Cons: Their versatility is limited to bouquets and arrangements as they are not suitable in boutonnieres or corsages.

5. Lily of the Valley

Little bell shaped flowers that are loved for their natural perfume and delicate appearance.

Uses: They are rarely used as a stand alone flower. A few sprigs of "lily of the valley" can be used in the bride's and bridesmaids' bouquets as well as in corsages and boutonnieres.

Pros: The addition of these small flowers to a bouquet creates a big impact with their fresh scent and woodsy appeal.

Cons: Flimsy stems make them difficult to work with.

6. Orchid

This is a tropical flower which brings an exotic yet elegant look to your floral bouquets. Orchids are available in many dramatic colors and with so many varieties to choose from, you can take the look from simply exotic to downright striking.

Uses: Orchids mixed with softer flowers like roses and lilies add interest to a bouquet or arrangement. They also look great alone or you can add some simple green foliage for a modern approach. Orchids make great hair accessories, too. One or two stems are all you need to create a stunning bridal hair look.

Pros: Orchids add sophistication and elegance to any affair.

Cons: These flowers are temperamental; so, following the temperature and handling instructions when making your own orchid arrangements is vital.

7. Peonies

A multi-petal flower that blooms early in the season and that is available in many bright beautiful colors, the most common being red, pink and white.

Uses: Can be used in bridal party bouquets or arrangements and are perfect for monochromatic flower themes.

Pros: Flowers bloom so big that it only takes about 4 or 5 of them to create one bouquet! They work well with most flowers but are very good alone as well. Plus, their sturdy stems make them one of the most versatile wedding flowers.

Cons: T flowers are too large to use as boutonnieres. They don't work very well when wire wrapped; so, hand tied peony bouquets are the safest bet.

8. Roses

The all time favorite wedding flower! Available in many colors all of which have special meaning: white means purity and innocence, red means love and passion, pink means happiness, and yellow means friendship.

Uses: Roses can be used in all your wedding florals from the corsages and boutonnieres to the bouquets and centerpieces. They can be mixed with other flowers or left to stand alone and can be used in tall arrangements as well as low compact ones.

Pros: They are long lasting, sturdy, fragrant, and are just big enough to be seen without being overwhelming.

Cons: Roses that are still closed are not quite at their best yet those that are too open look sloppy. They have to be opened just enough to be at their most beautiful.

9. Stephanotis

This very traditional and famous wedding flower consists of small, delicate, white flowers that stand for "happiness in marriage".

Uses: they can be used in bouquets, as hair accessories, and in corsages or boutonnieres. They work beautifully with white lilies or white orchids and are a beautiful addition to most bridal bouquets, especially those consisting primarily of roses.

Pros: They are often referred to as floral "jewelry" because their star shaped flowers added to a bouquet look like stars.

Cons:Their short flimsy stems must always be wired and taped before being used making stephanotis a more difficult stem to work with, especially for the do-it-yourselfer.

10. Tulips

This perfect spring flower is available in almost any colour you can imagine. Just like roses, tulips, too, carry special meaning depending on their colour: ivory or cream tulips mean "love you forever", red reflects a "declaration of love" and yellow means "hopelessly in love".

Uses: They make excellent bridal party bouquets and beautiful centrepieces.

Pros: Work well with almost all flowers and are long lasting.

Cons: Don't do well when wire wrapped so they should always be hand tied into bouquets. For this reason, they do not work well as corsages or boutonnieres but make great bridal bouquets and centerpieces.

This helps avoid dilemmas faced by couples with step-parents, by couples who have a deceased parent, and by those whose parents aren't involved in the planning of the wedding.

20 Questions to Ask When Hiring a Band or DJ for Your Wedding

The Band or Deejay is going to play an integral, visible role at your wedding, so you want to meet them in person if at all possible. Don't let yourself get intimidated by that cool musician vibe you still need to ask questions.

Here are twenty questions you may consider asking.

♥ What's your overall approach to playing weddings? How do you pace the event?

♥ How many hours of playing time are included in the contract?

♥ What are the option for the size of the band and the number of vocalist?

♥ What do you typically wear to play a wedding? Some bands bill for tuxedo rentals if they need to wear black-tie, while others own tuxes, so find out if there's a charge.

♥ Will you learn a song I request i you don't know it? How much advance notice do you need? Is there a fee to arranging the music?

♥ Do you require any equipment or instrument rentals, such as a piano? Is there anything else I will need to provide for you, such as a table for a record or CD player?

♥ Do you bring your own sound system?

♥ Do you need extra electrical power for your equipment?

♥ Do you need a certain style of stage? What size stage do you require?

♥ Do you want the bandleader to be the emcee of the reception or to stay in the background. If he's going to play the emcee, ask him how he views that role and make sure you're both on the same page.

♥ Review their playlist and identify your favorite songs. It's a good way to get a feel for each other's tastes.

♥ Discuss whether they take requests and how you want to handle it. You may not want guests taking the music into their own hands.

♥ Ask how long they've been performing at weddings. How many have you done in the same year? Ask for references from a couple of weddings they have done.

♥ How many breaks will you take? How long is each break? Many bands need a fifteen-to-twenty minute break each hour.

♥ How is music handled during breaks? Is continuous music and option? Some bands can leave one or two musicians onstage to play dung breaks. If not, do you bring recorded music to play? Does a deejay bring a set of recorded music?

♥ What kind of backup plan do you have if one or more band members falls ill or has an emergency on the day of the wedding?

♥ Do you have liability Insurance?

♥ Find out how long they need to set up. Emphasize that you want them set up and playing before the first guests walk in. Some bands like to arrive at the last minute, and they're still setting up as guests arrive

♥ Would you like a meal? It's customary to provide one but worth checking, in case they prefer to bring their own food.

♥ If you have a special theme, ask if they have song suggestions.

Tips for the Pregnant Bride - Dressing for two

These days, it's not so unusual to see a bride coming down the aisle with a a noticeable bump - and what of it? Times have changed. But since a pregnant body leads to its own set of aesthetic considerations, you'll find some tips for comfortable dressing below.

To camouflage your pregnancy a dress with an empire waist will be your best friend. It's forgiving to an expanding belly and shows off a newly lush bustline.

An A-line silhouette is also a good bet, though it tends to favor those in the first four to five months of pregnancy.

Stay away from extremely fitted styles, as your shape can change drastically in a few short weeks. You want your dress to be free flowing and comfortable

Fluid fabrics or those with some stretch to them are better bets than stiff, heavy materials which will make you uncomfortable..

Your likely to feel warmer than usual when pregnant, so it's best to avoid long sleeves, heavy satin, and anything else that can make you feel hot during the warmer months.

Whether or not you need a maternity gown will depend on how far along you are by the wedding date. Several designers offer maternity sizes and most bridesmaids' manufacturers make maternity styles. Hint: To save money order a bridesmaid dress in ivory and wear it as a wedding dress.

Wait as long as possible to buy the dress and push alterations to the last few weeks so the dress will fit on your wedding day.

Paint Can favors

I love this “paint-themed” wedding which was dreamt up by my friend Helen. The invitations paid homage to paint swatches and the favors were miniature paint cans filled with candy.
Helen’s wedding was held in an old paint factory that has been converted into an exhibition space. The building had a real industrial feel to it and she wanted to have invitations that were contemporary and that had reference to the paint factory without being too corny.

She made her own favors by purchasing small 125ml paint tins online, making her own labels and filling the tins with yummy treats.

Best Man's Wedding Duties

Traditionally the groom chooses his best man. This important role is usually filled by a best friend or a family member such as a brother, cousin, or even a father. It is also acceptable for the groom to choose a close female friend or family member to stand up with him - she is referred to as an attendant.

The best man's duties are many and varied. Here is a list of some of his (her) duties:

1. Checks on last minute details such as transportation and accommodations for out-of-town ushers.

2. Makes sure the groom is properly dressed and at the wedding site on time.

3. Pays the ceremony officiant his fee immediately after the ceremony. The groom is responsible for this fee and gives the money to the best man before the ceremony.

4. Carries the bride's wedding ring down the aisle.

5. Makes sure the ushers are all properly dressed and at the ceremony on time. Also makes sure the ushers understand how to seat the guests.

6. May sign the marriage license as a witness.

7. Proposes the first toast at the reception to the happy couple.

8. May stand in the receiving line or circulate with guests.

9. Sits to the right of the bride.

10. Tries to make sure the guests feel welcome by introducing people around.

11. Along with the Maid/Matron of honor, collects any gifts and cards at the reception and delivers them to the couple's home.

12. Holds and protects the couples luggage and travel documents during the reception. It is a good idea to place items in the trunk of a car.

13. After the reception he escorts the bride and groom to the "get-away-car" or drives them to the airport.

14. Makes sure that all the tuxedos are returned to the store the first business day after the wedding. The longer you keep the tuxes the more money it will cost you.

New Year Resolutions for the Bride-To-Be

Sorry I am about a week late but I wanted to take a chance to share good wishes and hopefully, some good advice. There are a lot of you newbie engaged ladies out there, and as you start a new year as the future Mrs. So-and-So, here are some Bridal solutions for you to consider adopting in 2011 to keep wedding planning FUN in those moments of STRESS. Congratulations!!!!!

1. Resolve to not lose sight of the Day After the Wedding. And I’m not talking about your post wedding brunch! You are marrying the most amazing guy person! You are lucky to have each other. After the cake is cut, the gifts are packed the the adorable favors taken home, you guys will have one another. So while the wedding is important, remember the next day is the real start of your new lives! If you keep that in mind, you’ll inevitably have MUCH more fun planning it all.

2. Resolve to be a gracious bride.
Oh, these people will MAKE YOUR CRAZY at times. Bridesmaids WILL be selfish at times and guests will sometimes pull some CRAZY, wacky stuff (what do you mean you want to bring your cousin and her 3 kids?????) BUUUUT, if you keep your head above the fray and remember to be GRACIOUS and thankful, your memories of your engagement will be MUCH sweeter. No one likes a Bridezilla, not even herself! (Seriously, I can’t tell you how many past bridezillas have called me months later to say “I’m not really like that!”)

3. Resolve to Compromise (Sometimes). It’s your day your way, but when arguments arise with Mom or In-laws or DH, sometimes its better (and easier) to stop, drop and roll. No, you don’t want to hire a band that your Mother-in-law loves or wear a dress just because your mom picked it out, but would it KILL you to have a menu card? Probably not. Would a monogrammed napkin totally ruin the aesthetic of your wedding? Not really. Don’t sweat the totally small stuff, and you’ll be able to put your foot down when it REALLY Matters.

4. Resolve to Trust your Team. Do your due diligence before you hire a vendor (Recommendations, ask around about them, look them up in magazines or online, check on insurance, etc) and then STOP DOUBTING them. If you have hired a true professional, they will care about doing an amazing job almost as much as you do. Energy, Negative, draining energy is constantly wasted Fretting over vendors who are already contracted. Remember, every vendor is a pro, but also a human, and negative questioning has never extracted top performance, in my experience.

5. Resolve to Stick to Your Schedule. I have to go to the gym 5 or 6 times a week not to act like a crazy Rhymes with Witch around the office. I know that about myself, so I have a schedule and I discipline myself to follow it. If you (or your planner) has set up a schedule for planning tasks and chores for your, STICK TO IT. It’s easy to let work and life derail you, but the more you spread out the TASKS of planning the wedding, the easier it is to NOT BE OVERWHELMED. Hire people in a timely manner, don’t drag out the process and stay on top of thank you notes and your registry. Work is very important, but you MUST prioritize your wedding as well.

6. Resolve to See the Big Picture. Read item 1, read Item 2 and combine. If you find yourself freaking out 6 months from now over a ribbon on a favor box, stop, walk around the block, or your desk, and ask yourself why? Maybe it’s not about the ribbon, and your annoyed that your fiance doesn’t care about the details you care about. Maybe you’re exhausted of making decisions. Maybe you need a little break. But remember, a ribbon is still a ribbon. It’s one tiny element that helps make the picture of your day: a painting stroke in the masterpiece of your wedding. It will not RUIN the image. Step back, see how great everything else is and move forward.

7. Resolve to Accept Possible Setbacks. Don’t take this as an omen, or as a “wait for shoe to drop”, please ladies, but sometimes there are random setbacks. I’ve had a wedding that needed to be relocated 8 weeks before the big day. Once, they put up a scaffold in front of a client’s venue the DAY before the wedding without anyone (even the venue) knowing. A friend’s MOH was put on bedrest and she wasn’t able to be at the wedding. They sound like horror stories, but ultimately, none of these things RUINED anyone’s wedding. And remember that, girls and boys. Sometimes, life’s complications sneak into wedding world. But they will not and cannot ruin your dream day!

8. Resolve to Do What You Can Afford. You aren’t going to win any awards by having the world’s largest wedding that you go into debt for. Assess what you can afford and commit yourself to having a reception that fits into that goal. Don’t be afraid to re-think what the wedding needs to be: maybe it’s a breakfast or brunch instead of dinner, or dessert reception with dancing.

If you are formal, be FORMAL. Celebrate Culture, Celebrate Faith, Celebrate the things that made you love one another. If you are enjoying your party, so will your guests, so make it something you would love to attend. Resolve to have it be the kind of celebration that you guys would ACTUALLY host. If you would never have a sit down formal dinner, no one is telling you that you have to…. AND if you would NEVER have a low key cocktail party… well, consider cutting your guest list until you can have the kind of fabulous celebration you can swing…

Remember, PERSONAL is not generic and INSPIRING doesn’t mean replicating.Somewhere, personalizing a wedding (making it seem reflective of your personalities and unique to the two of you) got confused with slapping a monogram on anything that was imprintable and replicating every cute idea seen around the blogosphere. Use blogs to INSPIRE, but try, really try to make it personal. It will pay off. If you are doing a photo booth, what are props you could use say something about the two of you? Maybe a handle-bar moustache speaks volumes about the two of you, but maybe two hockey sticks might say even more.

Veil Glossary:

Cathedral

The cathedral veil is the most formal, longest veil. This veil falls down toward your train, below floor length and beyond.

Chapel Veil

The chapel veil is a long, formal veil that extends to floor length.

Waltz Veil

The Waltz veil falls between the bride's knee and the ankle. One length shorter than the chapel length.

Fingertip

Elbow Length

♥ Remember, a save the date card is like a pre-invitation - once you send it to a person, by the standards of etiquette you have invited them to a wedding and must them a formal invitation too.

♥ Even if a recipient of your save the date card lets you know they cannot attend before the invites are officially sent, you must send them one anyway.

♥ Evites (as trendy as they are) or emails do not count as save the dates. Don't send save the dates through the Internet - always send them through the Postal Service.

♥ If you are inviting someone to bring a guest with them, don't forget to address the save the date to that person with the words "and guest". Decide in advance who your inviting with and without a guest to avoid confusion later on.

Materials

8.5 x 11″ 80lb white card stock (like this from Paper Source )

Color Printer

Paper Cutter

Double Sided Tape

Napkins

Instructions

1. Download the Eat, Drink and Be Married Napkin Wrap. Print using the highest settings on your color printer to ensure that the delicate text is crisp and clear. There are 2 wraps per sheet.

2. Cut each wrap on the black dotted line, making sure to cut off all of the black ink so that the edge of the wrap remains white.

3. Create a mock fold around your napkin to see where you should create the creases on each side of the wrap. After you are certain that the wrap will fit snuggly around the napkin, either fold the wraps by hand or using a bone folder.

4. Secure the wrap around the napkin using double sided tape. Please note, there is only a small amount of room to tape the wrap, so make sure that you fold the napkin small enough to allow a bit of extra room to tape the back of the wrap together.

Here are some things for you to keep in mind so that you know your second marriage will be a success:

Correct your Errors

As much as you may love pointing the finger at your ex and accusing them for everything that went wrong in the marriage, take a minute or more) and point the finger back at yourself. Every relationship breaks down because of two people; so what was your role? What mistakes did you make that you would like to make sure don’t happen again? Take out a pen and write these down. Make sure that you and your spouse have a few “ups” and “downs” prior to saying “I do” so you can see how you both can handle situations that may not be the most pleasant.

Change Happens

As mentioned above, change will happen. Everything won’t be how it is today in your marriage. You will argue and you will fight. You will be ecstatic and you will be overjoyed with one another. You will face challenges and you will face hardships together. The key is that you stick together, no matter what the change may be and support one another through it. Talk it out and communicate. Never shut down on your partner and never shut out your partner – otherwise you’re simply asking for a one-way ticket to your second divorce.

How to Set a Proper Formal Dinner Table for Your Reception

Your wedding reception is a formal affair. Proper etiquette and good table manners call for the host to ensure the table has been set correctly. The place settings should reflect the menu choices and always be positioned correctly. Don’t leave anything to chance. It is best to consult with your catering manager to be sure everything will be set properly.

Place Setting Styles

There are three types of place settings: formal, informal, and basic with two common rules shared.
1. The utensils are placed in the order of use from the outside in.
2. With a few exceptions:
Forks are place to your left.
Knives and spoons are placed to your right.

Proper Formal Dinner Place Setting

The elements of the formal place setting are not complicated. There are many elements, yet each is used in the order of service. Once you visualize where each element is placed and see how each is used during the meal, you will appreciate the fine art and nuance of a formal dinner setting.

Elements of a Place Setting

SALT & PEPPER SHAKERS are generally unsightly. As they are important to the meal, consideration should be given to them as part of the table decor.

THE CHARGER PLATE is an oversized and decorative plate set in place for each guest. The use of a charger is highly recommended as it presents a lovely and complete look to your table before the food has been served. Once the food course begins, it will remain in position. The plate for each food course will be placed on top of the charger and removed, leaving the charger to decorate the table between courses.

THE NAPKIN is placed on top of the charger plate. In the absence of a charger, the napkin is placed in the empty space where the dinner plate will be placed. Although the napkin placement does not change, you do have a choice on how to present it. You may choose the fabric and color of the napkin as well as the napkin fold. Your napkin is also a great location to insert your menu card.

CHINA selection can be used as an added element of decor to your table setting. Choose a pattern that enhances your charger plate and that beautifully accents your table lines. Your dining china is made up of three main elements: bread or butter, salad, and dinner plates.

•THE BREAD & BUTTER PLATE is placed above the forks on the left with the butter knife placed diagonally on top of the plate. Place the handle facing the right and blade faced down.
•THE SALAD PLATE is a smaller than your dinner plate and, when served, is placed on top of your charger plate.

•THE DINNER PLATE for the main entree will be placed on top of your charger plate.

FLATWARE is equally important as a decorative element. You may select an elegant sterling-silver pattern that will blend in nicely with your tabletop decor or a more eccentric pattern with gold accents and engraving for more of a statement. No rules apply to selecting flatware other than making sure that you include the appropriate elements that will be used for your menu selections.

•THE DINNER FORK is the largest of the forks and is placed to the left edge of the charger plate.
•THE SALAD FORK is placed to the left of the dinner fork. Should your menu require your salad to be served after the entree, the small salad fork is placed to the right of the dinner fork, next to the charger.
•THE FISH FORK is placed farthest to the left of the dinner fork because it is the first fork used. Only set a fish fork if fish is to be served.
•THE DINNER KNIFE is placed to the right edge of the charger plate.
•THE FISH KNIFE is a specially shaped knife placed to the right of the dinner knife.
•THE SALAD KNIFE is included if the salad is to be served first and is placed to the right of the fish knife.
•SOUP SPOON is placed to the right of the knives if soup is to be served as a first course.
•OYSTER-COCKTAIL FORK is set to the right of the spoons if shellfish is being served. Please note: This is the only fork ever placed on the right of the plate, and although very cute, in an effort not to confuse your guests, please do not place them on the table if you are not serving a fish or seafood course.

GLASSWARE
Glassware is placed to the upper right of your dinner plate and can number up to five depending on your beverage service. It is a very important element on your tabletop. It enhances the mark you are placing on your table decor. As with your china pattern, you may select from a variety of glassware to accompany your place setting. Your pattern selection may consist of clear crystal, colored glassware, or an elaborate pattern.

•THE WATER GOBLET is placed directly above the knives.
•THE CHAMPAGNE FLUTE is placed to the right of the water goblet.
•THE WINE GLASSES are set slightly below and to the right of your water goblet.
•THE SHERRY GLASS is placed to the right of the red and white wine glasses.

THE DESSERT COURSE

Depending on how much room you have on your dining table, you dessert spoon or fork and coffee spoon may be brought to the table along with the dessert and coffee or placed horizontally at the top of the dinner plate. In the latter scenario, your coffee spoon is placed closest to the top of the dinner plate followed by the dessert spoon on top of the coffee spoon. In this scenario, both spoon handles should be pointing toward your right.

Should your dessert require a fork, the dessert fork is placed on top of the coffee spoon with the tines pointing to the right, handle to the left.

COFFEE is served butler style with the coffee spoon on the saucer to the right of the handle. You may also elect to have the coffee spoon incorporated into your flatware presentation and is placed closest to the top of the charger plate. Your coffee cup and saucer will be in the same pattern as the china chosen for dinning.

The design of the table is a major visual factor when guests enter the reception room. A beautiful table has harmony and balance. The centerpiece is the anchor of the design and the place settings must be positioned at an equal distance from each other and from the centerpiece.

Scam #1: Bridal Shops Cut The Dress Manufacturer Labels Off Wedding Gowns

How the scam works: Some bridal dress shops remove the dress manufacturer's label from wedding dresses on the racks to prevent you from comparison shopping with other stores. If you can't tell which model of dress it is, then you are shopping blind. This wedding gown label removing scam is illegal and unethical, yet many shops who pull this scam on you will use all sorts of Jedi mind tricks to "prove" they are within their legal right, when of course they are not. Some bridal shops do it as a means to substitute cheaply made knock offs for the original higher priced custom made couture.

How to avoid the scam: If you walk into any bridal shop and you see this nonsense, just turn around and walk out. Any bridal store that thinks this low of you, with no regard to your legal rights and operates in this unethical mode, will surely pull other tricks on you later.

Scam #2: Bridal Shops Sell Used or Damaged Wedding Gowns as New

How the scam works: The typical scenario is you order what you think is a brand new wedding dress, paying in full by cash or check, because the bridal shop does not accept credit cards. They promise you the dress will arrive in 2 to 3 months in plenty of time for your wedding. The bridal dress shop is supposed to order your new dress from the manufacturer, which is usually how wedding gowns are purchased, as they are generally custom made to your measurements. After several months go by, longer than you were told of course, you begin to panic, the bridal shop keeps stalling you, if they even return your phone calls at all. Your wedding dresses somehow mange to arrive at the shop, but only within a week of your wedding. You quickly find out your wedding gown or bridesmaid dresses are either store samples, or have been used before. They either have damage, or they are dirty and dusty on the bottom, another sign indicating prior use of your dress. Of course your dresses are in the wrong size too, another indicator that something is afoul. It's obvious this is not the order you placed, and the bridal shop is scrambling to make it appear that is the order you placed even though the dresses appear to be too big. Since the dresses don't fit, now you and your bridesmaids are required to shell out hundreds more to the bridal shop to make the alterations for the dresses to fit you.

Possible root causes for this scam: Maybe the bridal shop forgot to place your order. This happens all the time and with your wedding drawing near, they know they must produce something quick, so they find something that looks close and pray you don't notice any difference. They may cut off the label so you don't know that your wedding dress is not the real Demetrios wedding dress or the real Vera Wang wedding gown. Another possible reason would be the case of a real unscrupulous salesperson who has some previously used wedding dresses lying around that they cannot unload, and they just happen to be close to your size. So they let you order your new wedding dress, but substitute these used wedding gowns or samples instead. Often the wedding dress will have damage or residue from cosmetics on them.

How To Avoid The Scam: It's pretty hard for you to prevent another human from lying and cheating you like this. But you can improve your odds by screening your bridal shops before you go shopping there to avoid shops that have a history of complaints for this scam. You should check any wedding vendor you plan to employ in the Better Business Bureau database or on RipoffReport.com.

Scam #3: Bridal Shops Lie About Being An Authorized Reseller for Your Wedding Gown

How the scam works: You visit a local bridal shop who claims to be an authorized reseller of Demetrios wedding gowns, or Vera Wang wedding gowns or other name brands, so you place your order. Of course they only accept cash or check and there are no refunds allowed once the order is placed. When your dress finally arrives (If you get anything at all), it's completely the wrong size, or the tag is removed. Sometimes you find out the bridal shop lied and your wedding gown is a knock off, not the genuine article from the genuine manufacturer as they claimed. This happens even more with online wedding gown websites, where your risk of getting scammed is much higher. In fact some wedding dress designers warn you not to buy your wedding gown online, and they don't even allow any of their legitimate resellers to sell wedding dresses online. Unauthorized bridal shops sometimes obtain your wedding dress by just ordering it through another retailer who is an authorized reseller. But this adds levels of complication and more risk for calamity.

Possible root causes for this scam: Sometimes the bridal shop can be in bad financial trouble, and can't even afford to buy your wedding gown from the designer. In desperation they'll pass off samples to you as the original couture. But former employees of bridal shops go online all the time to confess that with their previous bosses, this was business as usual.

How To Avoid The Scam: This scam is also highly prevalent because brides don't take very simple steps to protect themselves. If you know which manufacturer dress you want, go to their web site and print out the list of authorized resellers. If the bridal shop you're going to is not on the list, then you know they are not authorized to sell that brand. You should also print out available web sites of local bridal shops you plan to visit and verify all their claims of authorized reseller for the manufacturers they list. Always call the manufacturer and get from the horse's mouth. When you get to the bridal shop, ask to see their proof of license to sell a particular brand of wedding dress. If they give you any grief about it, and I can't imagine why any legitimate business would, then you should consider leaving immediately. If I was a legitimate reseller for Demetrios, you can bet I'd have signs everywhere, and my copy of the reseller agreement up on the wall. Don't be fooled by posters, you want to see the official approval from the wedding dress designer.

Or those trendy new colors from your favorite cosmetics company are all the rage, but save them for another day. Keep your eye shadow simple, clean and neutral toned.

2. Avoid shimmery blushes. Sure they’re pretty, but you want the focus to be on your dress that you mortgaged your left leg for not the glistening at the apples of your cheeks. Keep your blush more natural looking and matte.

3. Don’t try to match your foundation yourself. How to Be a Good Bridesmaid

Bottom line is that a bridesmaid is an essential helper before, during and after a wedding. There are the obvious things like helping the bride go to the bathroom at the wedding, attending all the showers and bachelorette parties, making sure she eats the day of the wedding, but here are some overlooked pointers that in my mind are ABSOLUTE MUSTS:

Opinions:

Before you get into the nitty-gritty of wedding details take a minute to ask the bride how she wants your opinions. Here are some possible ways to approach this: Does she want you to tell her every thought that comes to your mind when she shows you her dream wedding dress? Does she want you to read her expressions and generally agree with whatever she seems to be liking (this was what I wanted, basically just a confidence boost)? Does she want honest opinions no matter what? This step can really help avoid pre-wedding fights or extra stress on the bride.

Money:

Before you accept the bride’s request to be one of her bridesmaids ask her how much she thinks you’ll be spending. If she’s not sure about the bridesmaid budget, and you don’t have $500 to spend on everything, let her know from the beginning. With the economy as terrible as it is right now you need to approach this gracefully and efficiently. If you are in serious money trouble, you need to tell the bride. If you accept and don’t tell her it can seriously cause unnecessary stress later on when you can’t afford the dress she loves or the Vegas weekend she has her eye on for the bachelorette party. No matter how much you love this bride, it’s not fair to you to spend money you don’t have and it’s not fair to the bride to commit to spending money you don’t have.

Speak up:

When there is something you aren’t comfortable with. I recently ran into this issue with my good friend Meggan. She picked out a really cute dress from David’s Bridal that I’m excited to wear, but then she chose the shoes. They are beautiful gold heels, but they are 4 inch heels. I don’t do heels, I just can’t. I’ve tried, I have terrible balance, and if I fall at her wedding I will die! I felt terrible about this. Meggan is super cute and such a great friend that I was just afraid to bring it up because I didn’t want to upset her. Unfortunately I waited too long and all the other bridesmaids bought the shoes. Once I talked to her she couldn’t change the shoes obviously, so she decided I could just wear the heels in pictures and really similar flat sandals for the ceremony and the rest of the day.

Don’t talk about yourself too much:

This is the brides one and only wedding (hopefully). She wants your opinions on HER wedding, not what you want for your own wedding. I don’t care if you’re getting married two days after her. Here’s a perfect example of what NOT to do. Bride: “I really want a dress that is ivory and covered in lace.” Bridesmaid: “Oh me too, I love lace, I can’t wait to get married.” Here’s an example of what you SHOULD do: Bride: “I really want a dress that is ivory and covered in lace.” Bridesmaid: “Oh that is so you, it will be perfect!”

Go to the maid of honor whenever possible:

If you have questions that you think the MOH can answer, go to her if possible. It is awesome if the bride keeps everyone up to the minute with information, but if not ask the MOH because most likely if you have a question the other Bridesmaids do too.

So in general you really need to communicate with the bride in the beginning, ask her how you can help, what she needs from you and be honest about what you can do up front. I hope this helps bridesmaids and brides as they prepare for the big day! You may have heard of the four C's, well, we found five! Here's how to make sure you're spending wisely.

Cut refers to the angles the diamond cutter extracts in transforming a rough diamond into a polished jewel, as well as how much light is reflected from the diamond. The higher the rating, the more light is reflected from the stone. A well-cut diamond shines more intensely than a poorly cut one. A master diamond cutter will have the experience and skill to bring out the fire in any given diamond. Cuts can make a smaller diamond appear larger and more sparkly.

Color measures how little color the diamond has. Generally, the less color and more "white" a diamond is, the better. The rating system works on a range from D (absolutely colorless) to J (color slightly detectable to the naked eye) to Z (colored). Warmer white stones with a hint of yellow look great set in yellow gold and frosty whites dazzle in white gold and platinum. There are also extremely rare, naturally occurring colored diamonds in shades of blue, yellow, orange, green, pink and, the rarest of all, red.

Clarity measures how many "inclusions" a stone has. Inclusions are nicks, cracks, fractures and feathers that occur naturally when a diamond is formed and make up the diamond's unique handprint. To see the inclusions, jewelers and gemologists use a magnifying loupe and rate imperfections on a scale with the highest rating as FL (for "flawless", which is extremely rare) all the way to I1, I2 and I3 (I = imperfect, so I3 is the most flawed).

Carat is the weight of the diamond, not size. The more carats in a single diamond, the more money it costs. If you choose a ring that has one larger stone and another that has two smaller stones of the same carat weight as the single stone ring, the ring with more stones will be less costly.

Certification ensures that your diamonds are authentic and provides you with a reliable safeguard of your diamond's uniqueness. They are generated by independent gem labs that evaluate each diamond and offer a grading report—an objective detailed analysis of an individual diamond. The certification does not appraise the diamonds monetary value, but it does certify the dimensions, rates the 4 C's, indicates flaws, brilliance, inclusions, etc. Certification takes two to four weeks and costs upward of $75 for the first carat and increases incrementally. The most respected and reliable labs include the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the American Gem Society Laboratories (AGSL) and International Gemological Institute.

Rain on your wedding day was considered good luck because rain assured fertility. And in those days, you were getting married for that very reason. You can decide whether or not you want to fold the fertility into it, but you might as well capitalize on the good luck. Because as fabulous as you are, you still can’t control the weather! They’re predicting an awkward summer. So you might as well build it right into your planning. Don’t be caught off guard. You’ve found the perfect partner. You can figure out how to deal with the rain!

Ceremony Site: Just make sure you have an alternative, if you’re planning an outdoor wedding. Wherever it happens, you’ll be getting married. If you’ve planned a fabulous wedding ceremony and worked hard on your wedding vows, you’re going to have what you need to be married at the end of the day. That’s what’s important, right?

Pictures: If you’re planning off-site pictures, find a fun indoor site for them. Museums? Train stations? What are you interested in? And if you can find time in the day, sneak out and meet your beloved before either of you have begun to get ready for the big event and have someone snap some pictures of the two of you in the pouring rain, or the mist. And haven’t you always found that carrying an umbrella is a guarantee the weather will be grand? So, if your entire community is carrying umbrellas, it’s got to help, right?

Metaphors: Rain washes the world clean, it supplies life-giving water. Both of these are images that a marriage can incorporate! Use what’s around and let it make your marriage strong and at one with the natural elements.

Décor: Go with it. Throw out the candles and use fish in your centerpieces. Have a sense of humor and play it up.

First Dance: Start out your first dance with “I’m going to love you, come rain or come shine.” And segue into another song that’s equally mushy about a man loving a woman.

Sense of Humor: Nothing is going to be ruined by the rain unless you’re determined that your life, wedding and marriage will be ruined if there is rain. Why do that? Remember how amazing it is that you’re going to marry your beloved. And enjoy it. This is your wedding. Plan the wedding ceremony, craft your wedding vows, focus on your marriage and the wonderful community that has gathered to support you. Let the rain come. While planning your wedding you will experience a rollercoaster of emotions. To prevent yourself from turning into a stressed-out Bridezilla here are some simple ideas what NOT to do when planning your wedding.

Never choose a dress with the idea you will lose weight to fit in it later.

Never pay vendors with cash. Always pay with a credit card. That way you will always have proof of payment and will be protected under federal credit card laws. If your vendor drops the ball you will always be able to dispute the charges.

Never book any reception hall without visiting it several times. Visit around the time of day you plan your wedding. For example if your wedding is an evening affair be sure to visit in the evening to see the ambiance. A hall in the daylight will look totally different than the evening light.

Never put your gift registry information on or with your invitation as that is tacky

Never work with a vendor or pay any deposits until you have a written contract. Remember to get every solitary detail in writing. Oral contracts often don't hold up. Even if you are hiring a family or friend get it in writing.

Never take advantage of family and friends who only want to help you. This sounds like common sense but when feeling stressed it is easy to forget and will add even more stress to your life.

Never treat your hired professional help as your slaves for the day They are there to help make your wedding special so just let them do their job. Treat them with respect.

Never believe everything you see on those reality bridal tv show. You can maybe get some ideas but those are staged weddings and often far from reality.

Never be afraid to speak up to your vendors. If you have questions or complaints with some of their plans/ideas, be sure to tell them so. Even though they are professionals that does not mean they know what is best for you. All weddings are unique and there are no set rules.

Never forget to take care of yourself in the weeks preceding your wedding. Get plenty of sleep, eat healthy, and try to get some exercise. Not only will you look and feel better but also when you feel well you can respond to stress better.

There are several advantages to an in-house caterer, the main one being that you don't have to go through the trouble of finding one yourself. The in-house caterer is already familiar with the particulars of the room, which can carry many advantages (for instance, linens and dinnerware that really compliment the overall atmosphere.)

But the in-house picture is not all roses. In-house catering is usually more expensive than independent catering, often charging you for lots of little extras; often things you don't want or need)as part of one all-inclusive package.

How to Plan a Stress Free Wedding Reception

Planning your Dream wedding reception does not have to be as stressful as you may think;

Here are some general guidelines to help plan your reception while keeping your sanity. Some of these suggestions are so obvious you may just forget to even consider them

* If you plan to have more than fifty guests think twice before you decide to have a receiving line.

* Have a realistic concept of a budget and guest count and know your reception site before asking for a proposal from a caterer. Be up front from the beginning as to what your budget is; if you really don't know, then allow the caterer to present you a proposal based on your dream wedding, with suggested ways to pare it down if necessary.

* Note that hotels nearly always charge a city and state tax on the entire bill, along with a service charge, and they also tax the service charge; technically, though some call it a gratuity, legally it is a service charge and not a tip. Don't forget to figure this extra cost in your contract agreement before signing any contracts so you will not have any surprise expenses later on.

* Provide seating for your photographer/videographer in the room where dinner is being served so they do not miss something important while eating back in the kitchen somewhere.

* Figure that each guest will have from tow to three drinks during the reception. That does not mean they are drinking a lot; some people set their drinks down to dance or go to the washroom, and return not remembering where they left their drink.

* If you are having a buffet, make certain there is enough seating at least for the guests not able to easily juggle a drink, plate, napkin, and silverware.

* Provide some food and non-alcoholic beverages for your musicians. Musicians who are treated to a meal are in a better mood, which can translate to better music.

* A full bar isn't necessarily more expensive than a wine/champagne/beer/non-alcoholic bar.

* In addition to the bar, have some drinks (wine.champagne and non-alcholic )beverages served butler-style for those who find it difficult to go get their own drinks.

* Be specific on your RSVP card about the kind of reception you are having.

* Always find out specifically who on the catering staff will be coordinating the the reception with the band, photographer/videographer, and wedding consultant. Make certain all these people are in communication with one another and go over the schedule for the event in advance.

* Some food items (especially for a reception) are cost out according to rate per count (that is number of pieces per item)

* Don't be too creative with your RSVP cards when offering a choice of entrees (most people do not know that boeuf is French for beef. You don't have to go to the other extreme and just say "meat"; most people know the terms filet mignon or rib eye. Remember to offer a vegetarian choice.

By "nestled" I mean that the shallow votive candles are pressed down into the frosting so that the sides of the candles are hidden from view. This would look lovely in an evening wedding with all the lights dimmed and the candles are lit. The trick is to make your reception feel like a magical romantic setting. Besides putting candles on the cake you could place votive candles in bowls filled with water on each table. Light all the candles and dim the lights and your venue will be romantically lit by candlelight.

* Rotating Music Box

Borrow a music box that compliments your theme; set it to a mirror, surround the base with silk flowers and narrow acetate ribbons and the appoint someone to be in charge of winding the box off and on during the reception. It will be a real conversation piece.

When it comes to shopping for engagement rings, it's best to come equipped with a little savvy. Ring settings, the mountings that attach the diamond to the ring's band, are an integral component in achieving the right look for your ring, as some are more appropriate for certain diamond shapes. Here is a complete rundown of the most common engagement ring settings.

Prong

Prong settings usually have six or four prongs (or claws) that cradle the diamond. Prongs allow the maximum light to enter the diamond from all angles, making it appear larger and more brilliant. The prong setting with a solitaire round brilliant stone is the classic engagement ring look.

Bar

A variation on the prong setting, rather than individual claws, prongs on each side of the setting are fused into elongated bars to hold the stone in place. This option highlights more metal without obscuring the stone as much as bezel or channel settings might.

Bezel

Cluster

This setting surrounds a larger center stone with several smaller stones. It is designed to create a larger ring from many smaller stones.

Baguette

Setting Baguettes are rectangular shaped diamonds that can be added to the sides of a larger stone, adding dimension to a solitaire setting.

Learn to Love Imperfection

Do you know any person who is perfect in every way? Have you ever failed, fallen short, or been offensive or wrong? At a recent conference, I learned an important principle about love that needs to be shared. This is the ultimate in forgiveness - it's learning to love imperfection.

Marriage is the most tender, yet most strenuous relationship we have. If you have the expectation of perfection for yourself or for your spouse, you will be disappointed - probably everyday. Loving someone else means you love their soul - the good, the bad and the ugly (hopefully not too much ugly). At some point you will be let down, offended, hurt, angry, disillusioned, bored, stressed, frustrated, nit-picky, and upset. Can you truly love them anyway? Don't forget that at some point you too will be the one who offends, is wrong, behaves insensitively, hurts the other person, etc., whether you purposely mean to or not.

At the same time, a marriage relationship also brings hope, joy, security, partnership, intimacy, friendship, family, collaboration, support, fun, financial gain, passion, respect, honor, and love. Without pushing through the bad, you can never enjoy the good that an enduring marriage brings. Love should cover and forgive an offense, not dwell on it. Don't get me wrong, if we're talking about abuse or adultery... the rules change of course. But for other circumstances, learn to love imperfection while striving to improve your relationship.

Unfortunately falling short is a fact of life, even though we don't intend to or purposefully mean to do so. Examine yourself and see if you have unrealistic expectations for your spouse (or for yourself). Unmet expectations that are not resolved lead to dissatisfaction, resentment, depression, and more. Instead, practice forgiveness, patience and loving imperfection. It's not easy, but we all need love in spite of our faults and mistakes. We all need to know that we're loved no matter what - in the good times and the bad, in sickness and in health, for richer and for poorer... sound familiar?

When choosing your Maid/Matron of honor you should make sure she is someone you can depend upon through thick and thin as she will play a major role in your wedding. She can be your best friend, or a family member. Some brides are even asking their mothers' to stand up with them as their Matron of Honor.

Here are some of the duties of the Maid/Matron of Honor

1. Provides the bride with advice and moral support when she is frustrated and ready to pull her hair.

2. Helps with pre-wedding activities such as addressing invitations, making phone calls, and running errands. Often accompanies the bride when meeting caters, florist, bakers etc.

3. Helps the bride pick her gown and the bridesmaid dresses.

4. Acts as the head-bridesmaid: organizes bridesmaid's gown fittings, schedules all wedding day hair and makeup appointments, spreads the word about the bridal registry.

5. Pays for her own wedding attire (excluding flowers).

6. Attends all pre-wedding parties.

7. May host a bridal shower (with or without the help of the bridesmaids).

8. Helps the bride dress and stay calm on her wedding day.

9. Precedes the bride down the isle.

10. Holds the groom's ring until ceremony exchange (only if there is no ring-bearer).

Everybody talks about wedding invitations, but what about all the other terms and items that are associated with them. Below are explanations of some of the more common terms and items that you'll probably encounter while shopping for your invitations.

Seal n Send Invitations: This type of invitation is mailed to guests as a single-folded piece (without an envelope) having the respond postcard attached to the invitation by a perforation for easy removal. Since the respond piece is a postcard, you will save on postage for the return mailing. Prices for this product normally include seals along with a printed return address on both the back flap when initially mailing the invitation and on the perforated respond postcard.

Announcements : For those who won't be invited to your wedding but you would still like them to know about your marriage, you can mail them an announcement card. They can be printed on the same paper as your invitation but mailed on your wedding day or immediately after with the wording stating that your wedding has already taken place.

Reception Cards: If there isn't enough room on your invitation for listing the details of your reception or if not all guests will be invited to attend the reception, reception cards can be ordered to match your invitations and then be included as a separate insert. Please keep in mind that this card could possibly add to your mailing cost since postage is based on weight.

Response Cards: These cards are essential to planning for your dinner/reception since an accurate guest attendance count will be needed for food and seating preparations. The response card along with its mailing envelope will be inserted with your invitation. Remember to include a postage stamp on this small envelope which will also have a mailing address already printed on it so all your guests have to do is fill out the card and mail it back by the date you have printed on it.

Map Cards: These direction cards would be included as a convenience for any guests who might not be familiar with the location of the church and/or reception.
Printed Invitation Envelope Flaps: This option of having your return address printed on the outside envelope can save you valuable time and ensure that undeliverable invitations are returned to you. There is a small cost involved but it also gives an address to those who might not be able to attend but still want to send you a card or gift.

Lined Inner Envelopes: For a small charge, you can request your inner envelopes have a colored lining to add a special touch to your invitation ensemble. Color choices will vary depending on the invitation style you choose.

Envelope Seals: These self-adhesive labels add just the right finishing touch. They are available in many styles and are used on your outer envelope making it look like they are holding the flap down even though it has already been sealed.

Informal Notes: These are used separately from your invitations but should be included with your original order since they are usually printed on matching paper and this will save you on shipping costs. They are personalized with either your names or monogram on the front with the inside being blank for writing your thank you notes. Any leftovers can be used long after the wedding for other purposes. Blank mailing envelopes are included with them.

Not all of the above items are necessary to make your wedding invitations complete. Remember, this is your special day, so it's your decision as to which ones you would like to include as part of your invitation ensemble.

(MS) - While housewares and kitchen electronics still dominate wedding registries, today's tech-savvy brides-to-be are expanding their gift options and including more big-ticket electronics on registries, too.

Perhaps it's a trend spurred on by a greater influence from grooms-to-be with the registering process, or a reflection of the times: women are no longer kitchen-bound and content simply with blenders and coffee makers. Regardless, trends indicate that everything from flat panel televisions, to home-theater systems to digital and video cameras are popular registry items.

In lieu of this registry evolution, here are some tips for women ready to hit the stores and create wedding registries.

· Register for what you need or want. Many of today's couples have lived independently in their own homes before tying the knot. So it's likely that they have many home essentials already. There's no point in registering for a set of silverware if you already have one. Think about the items that can add to your inventory or specialty effects that you now desire, such as fine china or a video camera to capture your newlywed memories.

· Think multiple registries. You needn't limit yourself to one store. Choose three favorite retailers and register items at each. This gives guests plenty of items to choose from on your wish lists and provides greater flexibility to those who don't live by a specific store or don't have online access for Web shopping. Just be sure not to overlap items between stores, because then you could end up with doubles of things. It's better to choose three distinct retailers, such as a big-box store for linens, a housewares store for small kitchen appliances and cooking essentials, and an electronics center for those techy gifts you'd love to have.

· Register as a couple. It certainly may seem more time-efficient if you go out on your own to register, but involving your spouse in gift selection gives him more of a say in the household choices and future marriage. Consider avoiding the cheapest or smaller items - a ladle here, a meat thermometer there - because those are things you can certainly pick up on your own.
